According to PCWiki the game's settings are stored at registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IO Interactive\Hitman Absolution but I have nothing there except an entry for Sniper Challenge and all its settings. PCWiki states that it is 205930 but, confusingly, this is the same location used by Sniper Challenge. The only thing I can think of is that the settings and/or the save game are corrupted and that I may not have the correct location. That games loads to the launcher and works perfectly fine so the issue isn't with Windows 10 (v1803 build 17134.48) or the graphics driver (v397.64) otherwise both games would crash. Out of desperation, I installed Hitman: Sniper Challenge last night as it is only a small 1 GB download, but it uses the same engine as Absolution.
The final thing I did was to uninstall and reinstall the game, this time from Steam, but it still crashes on launching. I have even disabled the Cloud Save and renamed the remote folder in the 205930 sub-folder. I even checked that the NVIDIA profile for the game wasn't forcing any settings. I checked everything I could think of that could cause issues such as excluding the game folder and executable from Windows Defender, disabling the RTSS overlay, the Steam overlay, checking the permissions of the game folder and the save folder (which I believe is at Steam/UserData//205930) and so on. This progress bar took several minutes to complete then just closed. There was a couple of seconds of the mouse cursor spinning plus the usual "Preparing to launch." window but, oddly, a progress bar appeared after a blink-and-you-miss it Completing install % flashed up. Anyway, I had a backup saved on one of my external USB 3.0 hard drives so I restored that initially rather than redownload the game since I have a slow internet connection which maxes out at 1.2 MB/sec.Įverything went well and game restored and redownloaded the executable but on launching it from Steam nothing happened. One of these games was Hitman Absolution which I know was previously working on Windows 10 Pro as I played it either earlier on this year or late last (it was likely on the previous Fall Creators Update build).
To cut a long story short (thanks Spandau!), I lost a ton of games due to a corrupted filesystem on one of my hard drives.
